The Right Gaming System for You

I am a twenty-one year old college student at UNC-Charlotte. I am majoring in Software and Information Systems and minoring in Criminal Justice. In my spare time I love to hang out with some friends and enjoy some video games on each of the three systems.
Here we are in 2009 and the gaming industry is still going strong. Even in an economic recession, people are turning to video games to take their minds off of the doom and gloom of our local news. With that said, there are three completely different options when it comes to a gaming system. Each system has pros and cons to go with them, but in the end there is only one clear cut, edge defining gaming system.

Technology
The technology in all three consoles is vastly different. The Nintendo Wii has excellent motion sensing technology and has a number of innovative creations, including the Wii Fit Balance Board. That is about the only area in which the Nintendo Wii steals the show as the other two powerful consoles easily outweigh the Wii in technology. The Microsoft Xbox 360 has a number of innovations that keep it strong in a number of households. The wireless controllers operate flawlessly, and the wireless headset works without err. The main piece of problem with the Xbox 360 is the RROD (red rings of death). Microsoft was forced to add three years to the extended warranty to appease the masses as many people experienced the console breaking down. Fortunately Microsoft fixes the problem for free as long as it is within three years and has provided excellent service.

The clear winner in the technology part of the comparison is the Sony PlayStation 3. The PlayStation has motion controlling with the SixAxis controller, along with the excellent wireless controllers. Now that the official Sony Bluetooth headset is out, the PlayStation 3 has a headset comparable to the Xbox 360. The main kicker here is the PlayStation 3 has the best processing power of all three consoles, by using Cell processing power. Add that with the fact that the PlayStation 3 has Blu-Ray capabilities, and you have got a fantastic console. The PlayStation 3 easily trumps the other consoles in technology and is put completely over the top with its ability to play Blu-Ray movies.

Graphics
When you talk about video games, most people instantly think of graphics. Nintendo Wii is completely behind the ball in the graphics department. As opposed to the other two consoles the Wii focuses exclusively on gameplay and innovation. The Nintendo Wii is nowhere near the Microsoft Xbox 360 or Sony PlayStation 3 in the graphical department.

It is worth noting that technologically speaking, the PlayStation 3 has a better ability to have the best graphics in the end. However, at the current state of gaming the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have very similar graphical compabilities. The games on both systems are for the most part similar and because of that you have companies that build the game for one console and port it over to the other. Therefore, developers are not taking advantage of the cell technologies of the PlayStation 3 and are therefore limited to the graphical abilities of the Xbox 360. Despite that, both the consoles have fantastic graphics, but there is no clear-cut winner in this category. If you are thinking long-term, the PlayStation 3 will have the best graphics. If you are thinking right now in this moment, then both consoles are superb with graphics and it will be hard to find faults in either one.

Games
This depends all on what types of games you are looking for. The Xbox 360 has become known as the shooter console. And it certainly shows. If you are in the market for a shooter, both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have ample amounts of games to feed your hunger. However, both consoles have mostly the same games. The real creative games come on the Nintendo Wii.

The Nintendo Wii has a lot of bad budget games on the system, however, it also has a large number of very good and different games. You will not find a Mario or Sonic on the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. However, despite the big variation in games on the Nintendo Wii, they are not all excellent. Most of the games made by Nintendo are fantastic, including all Mario games. However, there are a number of games made by developers that simply use the WiiRemote as a gimmick and quickly make the fun of playing the console disappear.

Overall, the best games for anyone outside of childhood are on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. There is no clear-cut winner as both consoles have very similar games and both have exclusive blockbusters that set them apart.

Overall
Overall the gaming industry has seen an ever increasing surge in sales. GameStop and Best Buy continue to report increases in video game sales each year and that trend will likely continue. The Nintendo Wii has set a number of records for selling consoles, along with some of their games. However, at the end of the day the Nintendo Wii is nowhere near the best console. While it is a fun console to play at a party, it is not good enough to hold your attention as a single player. While it is a personal opinion, with everything in hand, I would find the PlayStation 3 to be the most advanced console on the market. It features everything Xbox 360 features and does it just as well. While the online network is just a little bit behind the Xbox 360, it is also free. Clearly all three systems are fantastic in their own right, at the end of the day, the PlayStation 3 holds the best value.
